When you think of a Miami vacation one should also take into account the abundance of outdoor activities and beaches in and around the Miami and Miami Beach area. The South Florida area is full of natural beauty and resources. Whether you like to fish, bird watch , hike, bicycle, surf, sail or virtually any outdoor activity it can be done in or around the Miami area. Let's do not forget that the Florida Everglades are in close proximity to Miami.  The Everglades has a countless number of outdoor activities including boating, hiking, fishing (and camping).  Here we will list the Miami beaches National Parks, State Parks, golfing, marinas, Miami Metrozoo, and other areas of interest for outdoor activities, along with some articles of interest to help you plan the perfect Miami vacation.

Miami Florida Beaches - List of the Best!

Miami is surrounded by water and with the tropical climate this makes for a fantastic combination for those who like the outdoors and water sports. Almost all of Miami's beaches have places to rent equipment to surf, dive, parasail, windsurf and so on.  Some of the rentals are in front of beachfront hotels. Here is a list of the beaches in the Miami area with activities that are happening at each one. Take a look before you plan your Miami vacation and you will save yourself time and frustration. Remember ALL beaches are open to sunbathing and some are topless or "Nudist Beaches" we will list the types of crowds that frequent each beach so that you may find the desirable beach inclusive vacation for you and or your family's interests.

Bal Harbour Beach

This beach is wide, clean and a mile long with palm shading. Access to this beach is limited to 2 public access points, 96th at Collins and 102nd and Collins next to Haulover inlet. Fishing on the jetty is allowed at the north end of beach. Surfing is popular near the jetty. Limited metered parking under the Haulover Bridge. No facilities or lifeguards. There is a mile of beach along the Atlantic.  Fishermen will find a seawall along Biscayne Bay for shore fishing that is some of the best in the Miami area.  Other activities are: kayaking, hiking on nature trails, and bike riding.  Rentals are available for chairs, umbrellas, and bikes.  The new restaurant here serves up some wicked good Latin food. You will also find the oldest building in South Florida (1825) which is a lighthouse in which you can take guided tours.

Enter 1 Washington Ave.  You will be at the southern tip of South Beach.  There is the Gay and Lesbian beach on 12th Ocean Dr.  Lummus park is included here at 5th to 15th St.  Access to cafes and restaurants on Ocean Drive.  The restrooms are located at the 10th St Visitors Center.  Fashion shoots, beautiful people and model spotting in this area of SoBe.  Great place for watching cruise ships pass on their way to and from sea. Parking Fee.

Oleta River State Park

This is the largest urban park in the state of Florida.  With a pristine mangrove forest and 15 miles of mountain bike trails, this little known treasure also offers cabins for camping. Kayaking through the mangrove forest you will encounter all sorts of passive wildlife like dolphins, a variety of water birds and manatees.  There is a butterfly garden here also. Virginia Key Beach - South

Although close to Key Biscayne this is an ultra secluded beach.  you will find shady areas and a bird sanctuary. This is the only beach in Miami-Dade where dogs on a leash are allowed.

Biscayne National Park

  • The southern shallow portion of Biscayne Bay.
  • The most northern of the Florida Keys.
  • The beginning of the world's third largest coral reef.

Miami MetroZoo

Everybody loves the zoo and this is the largest and oldest in the state of Florida. Here are some of Metrozoo's features:

  • Metrozoo houses more than 1,300 wild animals in a cageless setting that gives you the feeling of being on a safari while the settings closely mimic the animals natural habitat.

  • Miami Metrozoo is rated among the top ten zoos in the U.S. by Travel & Leisure magazine.

  • With nearly 300 developed acres on a 740-acre parcel of land, Metrozoo is the only zoo in the continental United States located in a subtropical climate. 

  • The Zoo’s newest exhibit, Amazon & Beyond, will be one of the world’s most varied and comprehensive tropical exhibits with jaguars, anacondas, giant river otters, harpy eagles, sting ray touch tanks, air conditioned buildings, and a unique display of a forest before and during flood times. Scheduled to open in 2008 it will cover 27 acres.

  • The staff is multilingual and is trained to educate.  They had over 15,000 sessions with educators and their students last year

As you can see by the parks, beach areas and The Everglades there is plenty of fishing to be done in and around Miami! There are just as many places to buy supplies and gear for fishing.
